Driving Data Excellence: Fast-Tracking ERP Integration in Oil & Gas

Phillips 66 successfully integrates legacy ERP systems into SAP S/4HANA using Syniti's data migration methodology and SAP ADMM.

Phillips 66 is a diversified energy manufacturing and logistics company, engaged in refining, transporting, and marketing natural gas liquids (NGL) petrochemicals. They are also active in research and development of emerging energy sources.

Project Background

Phillips 66 needed to consolidate and upgrade their data landscape following the acquisition of DCP. Twenty-year-old ERP systems and legacy DCP systems had to be integrated into their existing SAP S/4HANA environment. And with a strict timeline of six months, Phillips 66 didn’t have time to waste – they need a solution they could get up fast and count on. Phillips 66 needed an implementation partner to help drive strategy and accelerate their ERP integration effort in order to capture synergies as quickly as possible.

“We were confident in Syniti to deliver complex project under tight timelines using a repeatable process. We’ve trusted Syniti with our data time and again, and we knew they would be a strong partner.”

Implementation Highlights

Looking for enterprise-grade data migration services and solutions, Phillips 66 partnered with Syniti for their SAP S/4HANA migration. Phillips 66 was already running on an Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure, proving to be a huge benefit when it came to de-risking the migration project. Since AWS was already in place, it was ideal environment for onboarding the SAP ADMM solution.

“Based on our past experience with Syniti, we were confident that they would be able to provide the people and tools needed to deliver an effective ERP data conversion effort empowered by their broad industry experience and their preexisting familiarity with Phillips 66 systems and processes,” remarked Joseph Burkhalter, DM and MDG Lead at Phillips 66. “Syniti was able to execute within a challenging timeline as expected and we would not hesitate to utilize them again for future efforts.”

Backed by Syniti’s proven, repeatable data migration methodology, the implementation underwent two releases. Syniti’s team worked closely with Phillips 66 throughout each migration wave, demonstrating Syniti’s “Data First” approach to data management and migration. Sticking to the montage of “Load Early, Load Often” and coupled with the SAP Advanced Data Migration & Management by Syniti (SAP ADMM) platform, Syniti was able to expediate and de-risk the migration with minimal interruption to operations.

"Putting Data First with SAP ADMM has really helped us when it comes to audits. Having everything documented and the traceability to show where the data went and why has helped. SAP ADMM provides a one stop shop for a lot of the evidence needed during an audit.”

Why Syniti was Selected

The Syniti delivery team built a foundation of respect and trust with the Phillips 66 leadership team and had a strong desire to leverage their experience for this critical acquisition and integration project. Syniti’s “Data First” approach to migrations ensured that Phillips 66 data quality was maintained, if not improved, by the time of go-live. Having certain data readily available and accessible also proved to be helpful during audits, a common occurrence in the Oil & Gas industry.

Results

In as little as six months, Syniti helped Phillips 66 successfully complete a non-delayed, on-time go-live. Capitalizing on Phillips 66’s singular cloud infrastructure, AWS, for a less complex implementation, Syniti was able to successfully complete their go-live on-time and on-budget. “The cost savings truly lies in an on-time, ‘Boring’ Go Live,” remarked Burkhalter. Due to the reusability features built into the Knowledge graph of the SAP ADMM platform, Phillips 66 is now set up for success for future go-lives. By leveraging a cloud solution able to provide stability, reliable business rules, and the harmonization of data, Phillips 66 has set their team up for considerable cost savings for future projects.

“The Syniti team was amazing to work with and hit the ground running due to their deep knowledge in data migration and history with Phillips 66. The data migration team was able to keep the Phillips 66 DCP Integration project green for data even with starting development during the first mock,” said Burkhalter. “SAP ADMM was a useful product once configuration and connectivity have been established to source and target systems and networks,” Burkhalter continued. “Since it was all documented right inside SAP ADMM, the team was able to reuse what was already built and copy into the next release, translating to a lot of cost savings in terms of developments time and resources, and so that’s where I think the true value is.”

Syniti’s data management solution quickly became widely accepted and ingrained into the project, making it easy for the team to drive data definition and mapping meetings with a high success and completion rate. By providing one place to cooperatively construct data and on-demand error reporting, the platform’s reduced data quality issues and resulted in 100% data load for go-live.
